2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Redesign: What to Know | Wheelers GM
GMC Trucks | Branden Bodendorfer, Director of Marketing — Wheelers Family Auto Group

Quick Answer
The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full fifth-generation redesign on GM’s updated T1-2 platform. It brings two brand-new Gen 6 V8 engines, a 16.3-inch center display standard on every trim, all-new sheetmetal, and production set to begin in October 2026.
The last time GMC rebuilt the Sierra from the ground up was for the 2019 model year. Seven years later, the fifth generation is finally on the way.
GMC officially teased the 2027 Sierra 1500 in June 2026, just days after Chevrolet fully revealed the redesigned 2027 Silverado 1500 — the Sierra’s platform sibling. Both trucks share the same T1-2 architecture, powertrains, and core technology suite. But the Sierra brings its own premium identity, distinct styling, and the Denali luxury tier that GMC has built its reputation on.
At Wheelers, we sell GMC trucks every day. Here’s a clear, honest look at what’s confirmed, what’s expected, and what to watch for before the 2027 hits lots.
Why this redesign is a big deal
Full-size trucks are the bread-and-butter of American automotive. The current Sierra has been reliable and capable, but the infotainment has lagged. A 7-inch base touchscreen in a $45,000 truck doesn’t cut it anymore.
The 2027 addresses that head-on. Every trim — starting with the most basic work truck — gets a standard 16.3-inch center display. That’s larger than most luxury cars today. And the engine story is arguably bigger.
GM invested $579 million into the Flint Engine Plant specifically to produce the new Gen 6 Small Block V8 family. These aren’t just larger-displacement versions of the old motors. They’re engineered from scratch, targeting roughly 10 percent better fuel efficiency and meaningfully more power than the engines they replace.
2027 GMC Sierra engine lineup
Quick Answer
Four powertrains expected: an upgraded 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder, the proven 3.0L Duramax diesel, and two all-new Gen 6 V8s at 5.7L and 6.6L.
2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder (upgraded)
The current 2.7L I-4 L3B makes 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. The 2027 version gets a performance bump. Expect it to remain the entry-level engine and the fuel-efficient daily driver choice.
3.0L Duramax diesel (carryover)
The segment-exclusive 3.0L inline-six currently makes 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque. Reports suggest a 2027 variant may hit up to 1,000 miles of range on a single tank, thanks in part to a larger fuel tank. The Duramax is expected to carry forward with minimal changes.
5.7L V8 — all-new Gen 6
Replaces the 5.3L that’s been in GM trucks since 1999. Rumored to produce around 400 horsepower. GM calls it the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 in the class.
6.6L V8 — all-new Gen 6
Replaces the 6.2L V8. Expected output around 475 horsepower. GM brought key manufacturing in-house at the $579M Flint Engine Plant to improve quality and durability over the outgoing engines. A plug-in hybrid has been widely reported but is not expected at launch.
Exterior design changes

Quick Answer
All-new sheetmetal, updated front fascia, new lighting signature, more muscular box sides, quad exhaust on most trims, and integrated antennas on crew cab models.
GMC’s teaser shows the 2027 Sierra head-on with an imposing upright stance and the illuminated GMC grille emblem centered on the fascia. Cab dimensions stay the same as the current Sierra, but every body panel is new.
Key details from GM Authority: more muscular sheetmetal on the box sides, a new rear taillight graphic, quad-tipped exhaust on most trims, a squared-off kink at the rear window line, and a redesigned sliding rear window that addresses water intrusion issues on current models. Crew cab models integrate antennas into roof-mounted humps instead of a roof fin.
Spy photos captured Denali prototypes wearing 22-inch wheels with a strong power dome on the hood and vertically oriented front tow hooks. AT4, AT4X, and Denali variants were all spotted in testing.
Interior and technology
Quick Answer
Every 2027 Sierra gets a standard 16.3-inch center screen and 12.2-inch driver display. Upper trims add an 11.5-inch front passenger screen — a first for GMC full-size trucks. Super Cruise with hands-free trailering is also expected.
The current Sierra base trim offers a 7-inch touchscreen. The 2027 starts every trim with a 16.3-inch center display and a 12.2-inch digital gauge cluster. That’s a bigger tech leap in one generation than the last three combined.
Upper trims add a first-ever front passenger screen at 11.5 inches. Add it up and you have more than 60 inches of digital displays in the cabin. A redesigned flat-bottom steering wheel was spotted in spy photos, and dual wireless charging and an updated Multi-Flex center console with 25 liters of storage are expected to carry forward.
Super Cruise’s hands-free trailering capability — not offered by any full-size truck competitor — is expected to continue and expand on the 2027 Sierra.
Trim levels and availability
Based on spy photos and GMC’s teaser, the following trims are expected: Pro (work truck base), SLE, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. Regular, Double, and Crew Cab configurations will continue. Three bed lengths are expected, though some cab-and-bed combinations may not return.
Production starts October 2026. On-sale date expected late 2026. Pricing estimates start around $42,000 for the base configuration. No official MSRPs yet from GMC.
