The Quick Answer

The best way to save on new tires is to compare the cost per mile instead of the sticker price, shop before your old tires are worn out, ask for the full out-the-door price, look for rebates and seasonal sales, and take care of the tires you buy so they last.

Why Tire Shopping Feels So Expensive

A full set of four tires can run from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand, depending on your vehicle, tire size, and type. Trucks and SUVs usually sit at the higher end. It is one of those costs that tends to show up all at once, and often at a bad time.

The good news is that you have more control over the final price than you might think. These tips apply whether you buy from us or anywhere else.

7 Ways to Save on New Tires

Tip 1

Shop Before You Are Desperate

The worst time to buy tires is the day one goes flat or fails an inspection. You will have little time to compare prices and no room to wait for a sale. Check your tread every few months, and start looking when you are around 4/32" to 5/32" so you can pick your moment.

Tip 2

Compare Cost Per Mile, Not Just Price

A cheaper tire that wears out early can cost more in the long run. Divide the price of the set by the tire’s rated tread-life mileage to see what you are really paying. The numbers below are made-up examples, just to show the math:

Example Set Price Tread Warranty Cost Per Mile
Tire A $600 40,000 miles 1.5 cents
Tire B $800 70,000 miles 1.1 cents

In this example, the pricier set is actually the better deal. Tread warranties are not guarantees, but they are a useful way to compare.

Tip 3

Look for Rebates and Seasonal Sales

Tire makers and retailers run rebates and promotions throughout the year, and fall and spring tend to be busy. Ask about mail-in rebates, prepaid card offers, and any current sale before you commit.

Right now, the Wheelers Fall Fresh Start Tire Event lets you buy three select tires and get the fourth for $1 with installation, through November 30. That is the kind of deal worth planning around.

Tip 4

Ask for the Out-the-Door Price

The price on the tire is only part of it. Mounting, balancing, new valve stems, tire disposal, and taxes can add up. Ask for the full price, and ask what is included so you can compare apples to apples. Some shops fold installation into the price, and some do not.

Tip 5

Buy the Right Tire, Not the Fanciest One

Check your driver’s door jamb placard or owner’s manual for the correct size, load rating, and speed rating, and stay with it. A high-performance tire on a family SUV may cost far more than you need. On the flip side, going below your vehicle’s load rating is never a good way to save.

Tip 6

Replace Tires as a Set When You Can

Mixing tires with very different levels of wear can affect handling and, on all-wheel-drive vehicles, can put extra strain on the drivetrain. Buying four at once also makes it easier to take advantage of set pricing and sales. If you must replace only two, ask our team how to do it safely.

Tip 7

Make Them Last Once You Have Them

The cheapest tire is the one that lasts. Check pressure monthly, rotate every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, and keep your alignment in check. Ask about a tire protection plan, which can pay off if you drive on rural roads where nails and potholes come with the territory.

Stack Up to $240 in Rebates

The Fresh Start event also includes parts rebates, paid as a Visa gift card, when you buy and install qualifying parts. They stack, so if your vehicle needs more than tires, this is a good time to handle it all at once.

Part Rebate Limit
Brake Pads Up to $60 One per axle
Brake Rotors Up to $60 One per axle
Shocks and Struts Up to $80 Up to four
TPMS Sensors $40 Up to four

Rebate amounts depend on the brand of part (GM Genuine earns the top amount). Purchase and installation are required, and rebates must be claimed by December 31, 2026 at mycertifiedservicerebates.com. See a service advisor for details.

A Few Things to Skip

✓Used tires of unknown age or history. You cannot see internal damage, and age matters as much as tread.
✓Skipping the alignment check on a new set. It can protect your investment from uneven wear.
✓Buying on price alone from an unknown brand with no tread warranty or support.
✓Waiting too long on worn tires to “get one more season.” A blowout or a wreck costs a lot more than a set of tires.

Common Questions

When is the cheapest time to buy tires?

Prices move with promotions and seasons, and there is no single best day. Fall and spring are common sale periods, but the best time is usually when you can plan ahead and compare offers instead of being forced into a rush purchase.

Is it worth paying more for premium tires?

Sometimes. Premium tires often have longer tread warranties and better wet and winter grip. Run the cost-per-mile math and think about how you drive before deciding.

Can I replace just one tire?

Sometimes, if the other tires are nearly new, but a replacement tire should have a tread depth close to the others. Our team can measure and tell you what is safe for your vehicle.

Does Wheelers install the tires I buy?

Yes. The Fresh Start event includes installation at participating Wheelers Chevrolet and GMC service departments, including Marshfield.

Do I need to drive a GM vehicle for the tire event?

No. The offer is open to any make or model. Our service advisors will confirm which qualifying tires fit your vehicle.
