Wisconsin DMV Makes Custom License Plates Easier Than Ever
How to Personalize Your Plates in Wisconsin
Good news, Wisconsin drivers! Whether you’re a car enthusiast, a proud veteran, a nature lover, or just want to add some flair to your ride, the Wisconsin DMV has rolled out a faster, easier way to score the perfect special license plate — all from the comfort of your screen.
A Simpler, Smoother Online Experience
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles has launched a slick new special license plates web application that lets you browse over 60 plate designs, personalize your message, and order your new plates — all in one place.
From the moment you land on wisconsindmv.gov/specialplates, you’re guided through a straightforward step-by-step process that makes choosing and customizing your plate a breeze. Categories range from military and health causes to hobbies, universities, and even nature-inspired designs. Plus, there’s a visual preview so you can see your custom message on your chosen plate before you commit.
“This tool allows customers to see the plates they’re ordering, with their personalized message on the plates, before finalizing their order,” says DMV Administrator Tommy Winkler.
Plate It Your Way
Feeling creative? You can request up to three different personalized plate combinations right away. DMV staff will review your submission to ensure your message is available and appropriate — no surprises there. If your registration renewal is due within 90 days, you can even take care of that while you’re at it.
The best part? If your request doesn’t require extra eligibility steps, you’ll get your Certificate of Registration instantly via email or download. Otherwise, expect it in 1–2 weeks. Your fresh plates should arrive in 3–4 weeks — just enough time to plan your first drive with your car’s new look.
Collector & Hobbyist Plates? Covered.
The tool isn’t just for flashy custom plates — it also includes Collector and Hobbyist plates and even lets you personalize standard Wisconsin plates. Whether you’re restoring a vintage car or just want to show off your style, the DMV has you covered.
Behind the Plates: Who Makes These Happen?
Many of these special plates are backed by local organizations. In fact, there are more than 625,000 sponsored plates currently on Wisconsin roads! Groups can apply to create a new plate design — they’ll need 500 interested Wisconsin residents and cover development fees — but once approved, it’s another way to rep your passion on the road.
Ready to Roll?
Whether you want to shout out your alma mater, support a cause, or just stand out in traffic, this new online tool makes personalizing your plate quick, convenient, and surprisingly fun.
Visit wisconsindmv.gov/specialplates and start designing your perfect plate today. Wisconsin roads just got a little more personal.
