Pittsville High School Launches New Automotive Course with Industry Experts

PITTSVILLE, WI (OnFocus) – Pittsville High School (PHS) is excited to announce the launch of a new automotive course as part of its curriculum for the term that began on March 31, 2025. This nine-week program, offered through the school’s automotive department, will be taught by Mary Jo Wheeler-Schueller, owner of Wheelers Family Auto Group. The course will serve nine students, primarily 11th and 12th graders, providing them with a unique blend of technical knowledge and real-world industry insights.

The course explores the profound impact of automobiles on twentieth-century society while equipping students with practical skills for careers in the automotive field. The curriculum covers topics such as the history of transportation, the relationship between manufacturers and the aftermarket, automotive safety, and emerging trends in the industry. Students will also gain hands-on knowledge of mechanical systems, including tires, brakes, engines, and electrical components, alongside an understanding of dealership operations, service departments, and collision repair.

“It’s not just about fixing cars; it’s about opening up career paths for these kids in the automotive industry,” said Mary Jo Wheeler-Schueller. “We are providing real-life skills that go beyond the automotive industry—skills that will help them with responsibilities, accountability, and how to be an active employee at any business.”

The course objectives include interpreting industry vocabulary, recognizing diverse career paths, understanding the roles of service and parts departments, and critiquing the importance of ethical standards. Students will also explore the differences between Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and aftermarket opportunities, as well as compensation models like flat rate versus hourly pay.

A highlight of the program is its connection to the General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP). Enrolled students will have a fast-track opportunity to apply for this prestigious cooperative education program, which combines academic coursework with paid internships at GM dealerships. Graduates of GM ASEP are highly sought after, often securing rewarding careers in automotive repair, maintenance, and service.

“The automotive industry offers a wide range of career opportunities, like sales, finance, customer service, marketing, and management,” Wheeler-Schueller added. “This course is a stepping stone for students to explore those paths and build a future in a dynamic field.”

The course schedule is designed to balance mechanical training with real-world applications. Weekly topics range from the history of transportation and supply chain logistics to modern advancements in fuel systems and emissions regulations. Guest presentations from the Wisconsin State Patrol and Department of Transportation will provide additional perspectives on road safety and collision repair. The term will conclude with a focus on leadership, management, and job opportunities, preparing students for their next steps.

In 2021, the Pittsville School District successfully passed a capital referendum to expand its facilities and enhance its Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The resulting state-of-the-art facility is designed to cater to the diverse needs of students interested in various fields, including business, family and consumer sciences, manufacturing, welding, construction, agriculture, and automotive studies. The addition of an automotive program was the final piece needed to complete our offerings.

“The introduction of the automotive program directly aligns with the goals we set through the Tech Build and our district-wide referendum,” said Taylor Varsho, Pittsville High School Principal. “This program expands access to high-quality, hands-on learning and ensures our students are prepared for a wide range of career opportunities.”

The Pittsville automotive program accommodates a wide range of interests, from small engines and automotive technology to electricity, electronics, and advanced automotive training. Our CTE classes are among the most popular at Pittsville High School. Currently, 42 students, representing 24.4% of the student body, are participating in a work-based learning program, which is 15.9% higher than the state average.

“This program is incredibly important to the educational curriculum of the Pittsville School District,” Varsho added. “It reflects our commitment to offering real-world, career-connected education and prepares students to thrive in technical fields that are in high demand across Wisconsin and the nation.”

We are also excited to welcome Troy Kumm as the new automotive instructor for the 2025-26 school year. With many years of experience in both the classroom and the automotive industry, Troy will be a valuable addition to our Pittsville staff and community.
