How to Change a Tire
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Change a Tire
Step 1: Find a Safe Location
- Action: If you’re driving, pull over to a safe spot away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights.
- Tip: Make sure the ground is flat and stable to avoid your car rolling.
Step 2: Gather Your Tools
- What You Need:
- A jack
- A lug wrench
- A spare tire
- Your vehicle’s manual (optional, but helpful)
Step 3: Loosen the Lug Nuts
- Action: Use the lug wrench to turn the lug nuts counterclockwise. Loosen them slightly but don’t remove them yet.
- Tip: If the lug nuts are too tight, you can stand on the wrench to get more leverage.
Step 4: Lift the Vehicle with the Jack
- Action: Place the jack under the car, following the manufacturer’s recommended lifting points (usually outlined in the manual). Lift the car until the tire is about six inches off the ground.
- Tip: Never put any part of your body under the car while it’s lifted.
Step 5: Remove the Lug Nuts and the Flat Tire
- Action: Finish unscrewing the lug nuts and remove the flat tire by pulling it straight off the wheelbase.
- Tip: Place the lug nuts in a secure spot so you don’t lose them.
Step 6: Mount the Spare Tire
- Action: Align the spare tire with the wheel bolts and push it into place. Hand-tighten the lug nuts as much as possible.
Step 7: Lower the Vehicle and Tighten the Lug Nuts
- Action: Lower the car back to the ground using the jack. Once the car is fully lowered, use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Tip: Tighten the lug nuts gradually and evenly to ensure the tire is secure.
Step 8: Double-Check Everything
- Action: Ensure all lug nuts are tightened properly. Give the tire a little nudge to make sure it’s stable.
- Tip: If your spare tire is a temporary “donut” tire, drive slowly and avoid long trips until you get a full-sized replacement.
